Introductions at a party:
Friend: "This is X, she's a diabetes educator"
"This is Jane, she has diabetes"
Diabetes Educator: "Type I, I hope"
Me: "???????"
Type I, I hope! What the heck does that mean? Did she mean a lifetime of insulin shots is preferable to pills? Or does she think that Type II diabetes is just a result of poor lifestyle choices?
Of course what I should have replied was "Diabetes educator? Medical doctor, I hope". But I'm not that obnoxious.

... actually, I can believe it. People let loose with a lot of nonsense sometimes. :)
Wow, what an ignorant thing for her to say! I don't think I would have been able to keep my mouth shut over that one.
Geeez!
Mind you it does make a change for someone not to make the assumption that everyone they meet has type 2. You know that whole "Are you on tablets for that?" question!
But what a dumbass thing for her to say.

I would have done the same thing as you - "???" (strange, puzzled look on my face).
That is a bizarre thing to say, but maybe what she was intending to say was that you seemed too young to have Type 2 diabetes...
I don't know. That's pretty messed up to ever say "I hope" you have a particular disease. I mean, honestly, where are people's manners?
But the only thing I can think of was that she just thought you looked too young to have Type 2... which could be taken as a good thing... I guess...
Or she could have meant that I'm too fat to have Type I.
OOps, I don't think I want to go there.
There are no good interpretations of her comment and I really was too flabbergasted to ask.
